Trümmerfrauen, literally “women of the rubble”, were the women who rebuilt Germany. After the Second World War, there were around seven million more women than men left in Germany. Along with that, there was an estimated 400 million cubic meters of rubble to be cleared and four million homes to be rebuilt.
