According to legend, there lived two young lovers: Xóchitl and Huitzilin. From childhood, they were inseparable, climbing to the top of a mountain each day to offer flowers to Tonatiuh, the god of the sun, as a symbol of their eternal love.

When war broke out, Huitzilin went off to fight and was tragically killed in battle. Heartbroken, Xóchitl climbed the mountain alone and prayed to Tonatiuh to reunite her with her beloved. The sun god, moved by her grief and loyalty, shone his light upon her — and from that golden light, a new flower bloomed where her tears had fallen: the cempasúchil (from the Náhuatl word cempohualxochitl, meaning “twenty flowers”).

A hummingbird — believed to be Huitzilin’s spirit — soon appeared and kissed the center of the flower, bringing it to life. From that moment, it was said that whenever a hummingbird visits a marigold, the souls of lovers meet again.
